John Wes Townley Soars to Top-10
Finish in NASCAR Busch East
Series Debut
Greenville, SC (April 28, 2007) – Driving an unfamiliar car at a track he had never seen until Friday, 17-year-old Wood Brothers/JTG Racing developmental driver John Wes Townley looked like a seasoned veteran Saturday night when he piloted the No. 3 Zaxby’s/BB&T/PFG Miltons/Coca-Cola/Lang Signs/Athens Quality Glass Chevrolet to an impressive 10th-place finish in the NASCAR Busch East Series Greased Lightning 150 at historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
Driving a Chevy for Mooresville, N.C.-based STI Motorsports, Townley qualified a solid 20th out of the 39 drivers on hand for Saturday evening’s 30-car field season opener.
After climbing as high as 13th by the halfway point of the event, Townley cut a right-front tire exiting Turn 2 on lap 84. Despite receiving quick service on pit road, Townley was trapped one lap behind the leaders when the race resumed six laps later.
But the Watkinsville, Ga. native quickly passed three other lapped cars to put himself in position to be the “lucky dog” beneficiary when the next caution waved. His effort was rewarded moments later when a four-car pileup on the frontstretch resulted in a 14-minute red flag.
Back on the lead lap in 16th, Townley slowly began chiseling his way toward the front of the field. With less than two laps remaining, Townley drove past Joe Gibbs Racing developmental driver Marc Davis to nail down a 10th-place finish in his NASCAR debut.
Davis’ teammate, Joey Logano, won the event.
Saturday night’s Greased Lightning 150 will air on Speed Channel on Wednesday May 16 at noon eastern.
Townley will make his debut in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series on Thursday night May 3 at Shenandoah Speedway in Virginia.
Townley returns to action in his Brothers Racing Team Ford on Saturday May 5 when the ASA Late Model Series South Division visits Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele.
